The Masks We Wear
1) The masks I wear are the mask of happiness, and calmness. Other then when I am at home, I am always “wearing” the mask of happiness. I do this because I do not want others to know if I am upset because then they will feel bad, and I dislike it when people feel bad for me. I also “wear” the mask of calmness because I do not like showing any emotion besides happiness outside of my house.
2) What contributes to me wearing different “masks” is my relationship with the person. For example, my parents, I do not really have to wear a mask. I show my true self to them, no matter how mean or hostile I am because I do not care what they think of me, but with my friends, I usually wear a happiness mask. It also depends on how close I am with the person. I tend to show more of my true self, however not completely, if I am closer to the person.
3) Yes, there are differences between the way I want to be seen by my parents and by my friends. It is this way because I am not really that close with my parents, and that makes me not care how they see me. I feel like I don’t have to try to be nice, or make them like me, so I don’t really wear a mask around my parents, I can just be myself. Around my friends however, I feel like I have to be nicer and happier just because I feel like they won’t like me as much if I acted the way I did around my parents around them.
4) Yes, I wear a certain mask at school, and in the classroom, but they do not change from activity to activity, or class to class. I keep a happy and calm mask on whenever I am in school. To me, I feel like school life and home life are two different things. All the emotions I feel at home, no matter how sad or mad I am, when I come to school, I am happy. I think it is because I do not want people to know I am upset, so when I am at school, I am happy and if something is wrong, I pretend that everything is perfect.
5) Yes, I reveal different masks to different friends. I feel like the friends closer to me know the real me, and I “wear” less masks around them because they have known me for so long, and I feel like even if I am not happy 24/7, they will still like me. The friends that I am not so close with, or am just acquaintances with, I “wear” the most masks around them, mostly the happy mask. I am afraid that if I show my real self, then they will not like me.
6) Yes, my mask changes for members of the opposite sex. I think around males, I am more awkward and giddy. Around females, I am just happy. I think this is because people always want to make the opposite sex like them, even if they have a significant other. I also change my ask for people of different ages because I act more mature and nice when I am around adults and/or people older than I am. However, I do not change my mask for different race, religion, etc.
7) My masks are reshaped from day to day depending on my feelings and emotions. I think that if I am tired or something happened throughout the day, I am less happy towards my not-so-close friends, and more hostile towards my closest friends. The weather also affects my masks. I feel more happy when the weather is dark and gloomy, then when it is sunny and bright.
8) My concept of the “ideal” mask is to be happy all the time when I am with my friends, no matter how close or not close I am to them. I am striving to attain that “persona” because it would make it more fair to all my friends that are closer to me, and so they don’t have to feel my hostility when I am feeling a little upset.

Smart Choices for Lasting Energy
Usually when you eat, the food give you energy and satisfy your hunger. But when do you need energy the most? At 3:00 p.m. Usually between the breakfast, lunch and dinner hours, people tend to get hungry. They don’t eat big meals, but they go for snacks. Most convenient snacks like pretzels and jelly beans, satisfy your hunger, but only for a little while because they consist mainly of simple carbohydrates that are digested quickly, and they make your blood sugar and energy levels go up and down quickly. If you’re in need of a quick snack, pick something that is high in nutrients and are digested more slowly, like whole soybeans, because they make you feel more satisfied and they give you energy for longer periods of time. So if you’re ever hungry between the main meals of the day, remember to look for foods with protein, fiber and healthy fats. They tend to give you more energy and are more filling than convenient snacks.

Behavior Signals of Defense Mechanisms
Observation 1
-The Defense Mechanism that Subject 1 used was displacement. The words and/or behavior signals that led me to think this was the subject got mad for failing a math test, and she took it out on one of her friends. She used harsh words towards her friend, and even when her friend tried to make her feel better, the subject was very blunt and angry. She was also gripping her books very tightly and stomping up the stairs.
Observation 2
-The Defense Mechanism that Subject 2 used was displacement and undoing. One of my friends was mad, and took it out on her boyfriend. Later she realized what she did, and she tried to make it up to him by taking him out to dinner and a movie. The words and behavior that she used that led me to think this was that she was being very nice to her boyfriend after she realized she was being mean to him by saying nice things to him, and giving him a lot of affection.
Analysis
1. No, I do not think they were aware that they were using a defense mechanism because I do not think they know about defense mechanisms. Also, when you are angry about something, usually people do not notice that they are using any kind of defense mechanism. However, if they know about defense mechanisms, I think that they might know they are using them because ever since I learned about them, I have been noticing when I use them and which one I am using.
2. For observation one, I think the use of the defense mechanism had a negative effect because of her using displacement, it made her friends very unhappy that she was taking out her anger on her. For observation two, I think the use of the defense mechanism (undoing) had a positive effect because it made her boyfriend happy again, however, I think that if she uses it all the time, then it would soon start to have a negative effect because her boyfriend would get sick of her always getting mad at him, then making it up to him.

short story
Have you ever been reckless on the roads and it got you into an accident? Well that was what happened to me at the start of this year. On the night of January 6, 2009, my sister, Amy, my boyfriend, Alan, his two brothers Justin and Andy, and I left Alan’s house around 9:00 p.m. to go back to my house. When we first walked outside, I remember my sister sliding down the driveway and saying, “Whoa! It’s so slippery!” I then noticed that it was freezing raining pretty hard, so we all ran into Alan’s 4x4 and he started driving. I have a bad habit of not putting on my seatbelt when I am in the car with friends, so this time I did not think much of not putting on my seatbelt. As we were driving, the freezing rain pelted the car and made small clicking noises as it hit. The music was turned up really loud, and we were all singing along to it. While we were driving, we slid a couple of times and had a hard time braking because of the freezing rain but we did not think it was that big of a deal. It took at least fifteen minutes to get to Cherry Hill, which is the main road my house is by, and I remember how hard it was to stop at the red light.
As we turned onto Lotz at the red light, I turned to talk to Andy and Justin, who were also in the backseat with me. Alan and Amy were in the front seats and they were both still singing along to the music. None of us were really paying attention to how fast we were going until I looked up and saw the street sign. By then I noticed that we were going too fast to be able to stop in time. As Alan pressed the brakes to turn, the car slid and the brakes did not work because of the ice on the ground and because of how fast we were going, and the car only turned halfway before we crashed into a telephone pole. A split second before we crashed, I remembered I did not have my seatbelt on, and my first response was to grab onto the seat in front of me. The sound of the car hitting the telephone pole was the loudest sound of metal crunching I have ever heard in my life. It sounded like someone had taken a giant hammer and was smashing the front of the car with it.
