I dragged my semi-conscious body through the heavy, gray school doors, the wind slamming them shut behind me. Though inside, I could still hear the wind howling violently, causing the trees to wave their arms around wildly. Any signs of nature life seemed like a distant memory as the snow covered most of the ground, hiding what was left of the grass. As I proceeded to head to class, I noticed the teacher and security guard that usually stood outside the office were not there today. Not thinking much of the absent teachers, I continued down to C pod and made it into my classroom just as the bell sounded for class to start.
Plopping my belongings right along the edge of my desk, I took a seat in my chair and reached into my bag for my math folder. After rummaging around in my bag for a couple seconds, my hand finally connected with the smooth surface of my math folder. My fingers closed around the folder and with a small tug the folder slid free. As I found the homework from last night and placed it onto my desk, I look up, taking notice that the teacher had not yet entered the room. Strange… I thought, curiously. He’s usually always here before any of us are… So where is he?
Looking around, I could see that I was not the only one who had taken notice that our teacher was absent. Many of my classmates had started up conversations about the absent teacher, letting their imagination run free. I could hear stories ranging from being abducted and taken hostage by aliens to Seconds passed quickly soon turning into minutes, five minutes to ten minutes, ten to fifteen, yet the teacher still had not arrived. One of my classmates had decided to take action and go next door to try to find out where our teacher had gone. A couple minutes later, he returned with a puzzled look on his face. My class went silent as he started to speak; “The teacher next door isn’t there either… and neither are any of the teachers or staff in the building…”
As the realization of no teachers or adults hit my class, a frenzy erupted. Loud excited talking and scraping chairs echoed off the walls of the small classroom, making everything seem ten times louder. Kids were reaching into their bags, pulling out their cell phones, and calling their parents to deliver the news. The halls soon started to fill up with students exiting the building, deciding to return home because of no teachers. I had already called my dad and informed him of the situation at school, and he would soon be there to pick me up. Packing up my belongings, I looked down at my phone to see a call coming from my dad, notifying me that he had arrived. With one last glance at my classroom, I exited the building just as hundreds of other students had done a couple minutes before…
I bolted up in bed and quickly looked over at my clock. It read “6:05 a.m.” Sighing, I laid back in bed and thought about the dream I just had. That would be so amazing if that really happened, I thought, a small smile creeping on my face. As I got up to get ready for school, the thought of my dream still lingered in my mind. Arriving at the school and swinging open the heavy, gray doors, I passed the office and took notice that the security guard and teacher that usually stood there were not there today…

Make a Difference
A couple tears shed, a comforting touch, and a smile here and there. My anger and sadness mitigated as I watched his face intently listening to me rant on and on about my problem. I knew I would always have him to turn to whenever anything went wrong, and that itself meant the world. Everyone has someone they admire and look up to, whether it a friend, a family member, or anyone else in their life. Although there are many people in my life have influenced me to become the person I am today, I give my friend, Marvic Malabanan, the most credit. Though most adolescents would look up to their family and parents as role models, I have always looked up to the honest, helpful, and modest friend that I have known for almost my entire life. He and I have spent most of our lives together, and it is because of this very reason that I can say that I know Marvic’s personality and his greatest assets and qualities almost as well as I know the back of my hand.
Though Marvic has unlimited great qualities, the fact that he is a great listener and will listen to any problem or situation in anyone’s life is one of the most favorable. In an instant without hesitation, Marvic will listen to and give feedback about any situation without being biased. These days, I have found it hard for anyone not to judge in a situation, and because Marvic can resist being biased, it makes it easier for anyone to talk to him. Personally, I have spent many hours with Marvic talking about everything; from school to college to boyfriends and much more, all of which included plenty of feedback and encouragement. Without a doubt, I can honestly call Marvic the most sincere and honest person I know.
I emphatically appreciate Marvic's honesty and trustworthiness as other qualities I see in him. Never before have I known Marvic to lie about anything or to anyone. Although sometimes the truth can hurt, Marvic always finds a way around the harsh and painful words, and delivers the bad news as gently as possible. Secrets and private information are also something’s I would never regret or doubt trusting him with. When he gives word that the private information will never make it to anyone else’s ears, any further questioning subsides. Honesty and trustworthiness is a quality of Marvic’s that I completely admire.
Out of all the people in my life, Marvic is among the greatest and strongest people that I have met, and I am very grateful for his presence. Being friends with Marvic helps me to become a better person inside and out. Though he also has weaknesses, his strengths overpower any disparagements about him. Admiring his strengths and even weaknesses, I someday hope to become more like the friend that I have known for almost my entire life, in high hopes that people will see some of Marvic’s qualities in myself.

Describe a close friend.  What do you respect or admire about this person, and why?  What do you think your friendship with this person says about you?  **(Ohio State, 2008) **

Sentencing Letter

Dear Judge Mathis,
Recently, there has been a case that has been all the talk at my office. The jury has decided to prosecute John Fiorenza, in the murder of Nancy Titterton. I would like to ask you for a sentence suited for Mr. Fiorenza.

On Good Friday, 1936, two furniture men that were returning a couch that had been under repair, climbed the stairs to the Titterton's fourth-floor apartment. When they found the front door ajar, one of the furniture men, Theodore Kruger, called out into the home. When he got no response, his partner and he cautiously made their way into the small apartment. Inside, they saw one of the beds showed signs of disorder, a disheveled bedspread, and clothing was strewn carelessly on the floor. When they saw a light in the bathroom, Kruger slowly opened the door to reveal Nancy Titerton lying face down in an empty bath. Nancy was nude except for her rolled-down stockings. It appeared she had been st ranged with her own pajama jacket.

As the inspection went on for the murderer, Chief Inspector John Lyons became more and more puzzled. Everything pointed to this murder being a planned one, however, the killer had brought the cord with him and taken it away. Nancy Titterton was a timid woman, and would most likely not admit a stranger into the apartment, so either the killer had broken in or she knew him.

After careful inspection, a strand of stiff white hair that was barely half an inch long was found on a stitch of the bedspread. Under a microscope, it was found to be horsehair, of the type used for stuffing furniture. When Lyons obtained a sample of horsehair from the couch being repaired, he found them to be identical. Under more research, Lyon found it to be from one of the repair men.

Lyon visited Kruger at his upholstery shop. Upon further interrogation, Lyon found out that Fiorenza had been late to work on Good Friday. When pushed for more, Kruger admitted that Fiorenza had a checkered past, also, when they looked through his records, they found he had been diagnosed as delusional and prone to wild fantasies.

Lyon later found the evidence he was looking for on April 17: the piece of twine found beneath Nancy Titterton's body. When Fiorenza was brought in for questioning, he finally confessed to killing Nancy because she had refused to have intercourse with him.

In closing, i would like to point out that John Fiorenza is a delusional murderer. Although his crime consisted of only one murder so far, we believe that Fiorenza would continue to kill if agitated, and should be either put into prison for life, or given the death sentence. Such an act must be brought to justice.

Sincerely,
Anne Tam
State Prosecutor

A Change in Life
We have all had someone in our lives that influence us and help us be better people, but there is usually one specific person that we all look up to and admire and hope to be more like that person when we grow up. Although there are many people that fit that description in a person's life, there is usually one specific person that is looked up to the most. We all have different people to look up to, but there is always someone there to look up to and admire, no matter what kind of person they are.
Although there are many people in my life that influence me to be who I am today, and there are many people that I look up to and admire, there is only one person that I truly can look up to, and that is my friend Marvic Malabanan. Marvic and I have known each other for our entire lives, and he is one of my closest friends. Because of this reason, I know Marvic’s personality and most of his greatest qualities. I can honestly say that Marvic is the nicest person that I know; always worrying about everyone and making sure not to say the wrong words and hurt others feelings. He truly is a great person.
One of Marvic’s greatest qualities is that he is always there to listen to problems and situations in one’s life. He will drop everything he is doing and immediately listen to what the person is telling him and honestly try his hardest to help them through their problem without being too biased. These days, hardly anyone can listen to a problem or situation without trying to side with one side or another. However, Marvic disregards the “sides” and just tells you what he thinks is right and what should be done to solve the problem. Also, he is just a great person to talk to about life. Personally, I have spent many hours with Marvic just talking about everything and nothing. I would have to say this is his greatest quality; to be able to have fun and talk about life as if it was just another problem in someone’s daily life.
Another one of Marvic’s qualities that I really admire is his ability to not talk bad about anyone. These days, it is hard to find someone that is not caught up in the gossip and bad mouthing of friends and even strangers. If caught bad mouthing or talking about someone, Marvic will personally intervene and say why he thinks it is wrong to talk about a person in such a manner. Although sometimes it is hard to talk about someone without bad mouthing them or saying what is disliked about the person, being around Marvic makes me a better person overall because if I am always talking bad or bad mouthing someone, I will soon be at that end of the line; having people talk bad about me. However, Marvic keeps me and everyone else around him in line so they do not start going down that wrong road in life and seeing everything negatively.
Overall, I believe that Marvic Malabanan is one of the greatest people that I know. He is strong, and he knows what is right. I am glad to have known him for so long and to be so close to him. Admiring all of his strengths and weaknesses, I someday hope to be more like him and have people see me the way they see him; the one they can go to for all their problems and life situations without hesitating to ask. I believe Marvic and I will be great friends forever, and I am glad to have met him back when we were in preschool.

english paper

As the soft dinging of the school bell sounded, I quickly gathered my things together and crammed them into my bag. I rose from my cool, plastic seat as I picked up my bag and slung it over my shoulder. Rushing to the door, I waited impatiently for my friend to make his way over to me. The seconds seemed like hours as I stood waiting, the minutes for the walk we had to make slowly decreasing. I had to be so lucky as to go to a school district that requires me to walk back and forth between three schools. I thought, sarcastically. Can't wait till it starts snowing. When my friend finally reached me, I shot him a scowl before turning toward the door and exiting.
Making our way out into the hallway, we both could see that today was not a day we would arrive to third hour on time. Kids were pouring out of the many classrooms and into the small hallway hardly fit for ten kids. Forcefully pushing our way into the crowd, my friend and I managed to snag a spot in the large mass of people all slowly migrating toward the door. Frustration and impatience coursed through me as I saw the groups of people randomly standing in the middle of the hallway having conversations, disregarding everyone that was trying to get through. A couple seconds later, the crowd finally started moving at a faster pace, allowing me to get closer to the door. Giving a final shove to the people ahead of me, my friend and I managed to make it through the door and out into the cold.
As soon as I stepped outside, the icy wind made no hesitation to whip against my face. Hoping my sweater would provide some warmth, I reached around my head and pulled my hood up. Looking over at my friend, I could see he had done the same. It was only the first day of autumn yet it felt like winter. Not softening its harsh lashes, the wind continued to whip around my friend and me, causing shivers to run continuously down my spine. Looking around me, I could see that the mass majority of the population had already dug out their winter coats and jackets from the depths of their closets. The big puffy coats and scarves might have been too soon for kids in other school districts, but for the kids who attended PCEP, puffy coats and scarves were the only way to stay warm while walking between the three schools.
I laughed softly, asking myself why I had not done the same, for the hoodie I was wearing provided hardly any warmth. Because of the cold, my friend and I had hardly spoken a word to each other. From the look on his face, I could tell he was just as cold as I was. Despite not wanting to move at all, I reached down into my pocket and exposed the bottom of my phone; 9:24 a.m. Cursing silently, I nudged my friend as if telling him to walk faster, for we only had three more minutes to get into Plymouth.
Meandering around the group moving slowly in front of us, my friend and I picked up our pace. As we stepped onto the Plymouth-Salem bridge, the metal ramp creaked loudly from beneath us, as if about to break. Almost there, almost there, almost there. I chanted silently to myself as another cold gust of wind hit me in the face. Right as my friend and I made our way off the bridge, the loud ringing of the Plymouth bell pierced the air around us, shortly followed by the Canton bell. By then, we were only a short distance away from the B pod doors. Half a minute later, we had finally made our way up to the door that led inside. Grabbing hold of the door handle, I yanked the door open to feel a warm rush of air hit me in the face. “Finally!” I cried, triumphantly. Waving goodbye to my friend and running quickly up the B pod stairs, the realization that I would have to make this trek everyday until the semester ended made me sigh loudly in defeat.

carmine calabro

Type of Crime: Mutilation and Biting

Date: 1979

Location: New York City

On October 12, 1979, the body of Francine Elveson was found nude on the roof of the Pelham Parkway housing project in the Bronx. She had sustained many injuries, consisting of being beaten, and strangled with the strap of her purse. Also, across her chest scrawled in ballpoint pen, was a message from the killer to the police, challenging them to track him down. In his frenzy he had launched a ferocious biting attack on the insides of Elveson’s thighs.

The incriminating evidence in this case were the bite marks left on Francine Elveson’s thighs. They processed the evidence by taking photographs and making casts to compare to the teeth of a possible suspect using a variety of equipment that could include infrared and ultraviolet photography, electron microscopy, even computer analysis.

The profile that the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit provided of the killer was incredibly accurate. The Unit predicted that the killer was a male, aged twenty-five to thirty-five, poorly educated, probably living in the building where the attack had occurred, either alone or with a single parent, and suffering from a psychosis so acute that it would have required treatment in a mental institution. The actual profile of Calabro was that he was thirty-two years old, in the age range that the Unit gave. Calabro was also poorly educated because since he left the hospital, he had dropped out of high school, and was also living in the same building as the victim, even on the same floor. Calabro lived with a single parent; his dad, and also had a history of mental instability and had to go to the hospital for treatment. Overall, the Behavioral Science Unit provided a very accurate profile of the killer, getting almost every little detail correct.

When a single black pubic hair was found on Francine Elveson’s body, the investigators thought the hair was shed by the attacker, however, by the end of the investigation, the police had finally found out that the black hair was indeed not a hair from the killer, but from a black male murder victim Calabro had killed before he killed Francine Elveson.

The Nightstalker

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury:

The criminal has finally been caught. Though i would like to say that catching this criminal has been an easy task, i cannot. It has taken over a year to finally bring this criminal to justice, and many lives have been lost along the way.

Looking across the room, i can see Richard Ramirez sitting calmly in his seat as he waits for the decision of the court. Although the terrifying Nightstalker has finally been caught, the fear he instilled in some of his surviving victims are obviously still there. The first time that The Nightstalker struck was in June 1984 in Los Angeles, California, and his first victim was a young woman who was stabbed to death in her own home. Now imagine how terrifying that would be? You think of your home as a safe haven, a place to relax, but if you left your window open, you could most likely become the next victim of The Nightstalker.

Now lets look at the "pattern" that Mr. Ramirez followed. The murders always followed a set pattern, often happening in the early hours of the morning, and most likely when a window was open. The Nightstalker would first cut the phone lines before entering the house and shooting any adult males he saw in the head. All his female victims were raped, often next to the bodies of their dead partners. Again, imagine how the females felt as they were being sexually assaulted next to a friend or maybe even their husbands or fiances. Not only did he rape and kill his victims, he also made them "swear upon Satan" at the murder.

Even now as i look at Richard Ramirez, he shows no sympathy or compassion for his victims. Sitting there with such a calm look on his face as if he did nothing wrong infuriates me. How is it humanly possible for someone to kill so many people without feeling a strip of sympathy? It seems impossible, however, as i sit here staring at the murderer, i can now see how it is possible for the notorious Nightstalker.

Now let's look at the clues and evidence that led to the capture of this murderer. In August 1985 in Mission Viejo, a young couple was attacked at home. Following his "pattern", the Nightstalker first shot the male through the head before raping the female. Although the female was terrified, she managed to memorize the license plate number of the killer's old orange Toyota as he drove off. The car was then found out to be stolen in Chinatown while the owner was eating in a restaurant. Though police officers watched the car around the clock in case the killer returned, he did not, and it forced that officers to remove the car for forensic examination. Good idea because experts managed to lift a partial fingerprint.

After locating the fingerprint, the fingerprint was scanned across a computerized fingerprint database system installed by the LAPD in 1985.

A Lesson Learned
There comes a time in everyone's life when they realize they need a change from their everyday lifestyle. Either it is because they do not enjoy it, or because they know they are going down the wrong fork in the road and recognizes that change is needed immediately. Although a turning point in anyone's life could be unexpected or sudden, and can even be traumatic or heinous, a turning point is when your life suddenly takes a different turn in events whether you like it or not.
On the first day of high school, I remember how excited I was to finally be leaving middle school and going to the largely talked about PCEP. Riding the bus with my best friend of two years, Trisha, we talked about all the things we could and would do now that we were in high school. We both wanted to join many clubs and sports and be as active as we could so our transcript would look good for college. Although most of her classes were located in Salem, and mine in Plymouth, we still promised to eat lunch together and meet up in between classes whenever we possibly could. The first couple days of lunch, it was only Trisha and me. However, as school progressed, we both made more and more friends and our lunch group grew. At first, I was overjoyed that Trisha was talking to people and making friends because in middle school, she was shy and did not talk much, but as the days passed, I started seeing changes in Trisha; and it was not the good kind.
As school continued and seasons changed, so did Trisha's personality. No longer was she the shy, quiet girl that sat by herself in a classroom, she now was the loud and obnoxious girl that people shot glares at. Although I hugely disliked the change, I did not say anything to Trisha, for she might get mad and I would lose my best friend to the numerous group of friends she had made this year. Because of my fear of losing Trisha, I always kept quiet about everything even when I knew she was doing something wrong. Despite my attempts to keep our relationship the same as it was in middle school, I could see that was now nearly impossible.
As time went on, our relationship got more and more strained, until we hardly even hung out outside school anymore. Then came one day when we were riding the bus, Trisha asked me to come over later. I was so excited, for we had not hung out in what seemed like forever. Happily, I told her that I would be over as soon as my homework was completed. Excited as I was, I still managed to complete my homework quickly. The minute I finished, I headed next door to Trisha’s house and knocked on the door. Trisha answered the door after a couple knocks and let me in, but as soon as I stepped into the house, I could smell a strange aroma in the air; it was like something I had never smelled before. Shaking off the strange feeling I was getting, I followed my best friend down to her basement, where she quickly closed the door behind me.
Down in her basement, I could see we were not alone; all her new friends from lunch were there. As I waved to them, something white in one of the girls’ hands caught my eye, and it suddenly hit me what the strange smell was; marijuana. Turning around abruptly to my best friend standing behind me, I could see she was no longer there, but was on the couch smoking with the rest of the group. I stood in shock as I watched the girl who used to be my best friend smoke pot like it was an acceptable thing to do. Shooting them all a disgusted look, I briskly walked up the stairs and out of the house as my best friend shouted behind me to come back.
From then on, Trisha only continued to change more. Her grades dropped drastically, and she started hiding out in the school bathrooms to skip class, and even convinced me a couple times to skip with her. For a while, I did not think about the consequences of getting caught skipping, but that all changed one day while we were skipping together in the Salem bathrooms. A loud booming voice suddenly penetrated the silence of the bathroom, telling us to both come out. My heart pounded against my chest, as if trying to jump out. Although the only consequences were a phone call home and an after school detention, I felt that was the last straw. It suddenly hit me that it did not matter how long we were friends or how good of friends we happened to be; it was not worth losing my parents’ trust and messing up my high school record in freshmen year all because of a bad influence. That day forward whenever Trisha talked to me or asked me to come over, I answered her bluntly, showing her I had no interest in friends any longer. Though it was sad to end such a good friendship, I instantly felt relieved that I was free of her. There would be no more bad influences.
Although the road to the turning point in my life was not very pleasant, the outcome and result of it made me more proud of myself then ever. I had given up a friend because of the bad choices and decisions she had made once she got to high school. During the couple of months this all happened, I learned a life lesson; always make my own decisions based on what I think is right or wrong regardless of the peer pressure and bad decisions that sometimes comes along with friends. Though I am ashamed of some of the things that happened while I was friends with Trisha, I do not regret my friendship with her, for it taught me many lessons that I would forever hold with me.

Untraceable Murder

On the morning of August 18, 1965, in Longboat Key, Florida, Dr. Juliette Karow was awoken from her sleep by a phone call from one of her patients, Carl Coppolino. He frantically explained that he had just found his wife, Carmela, dead from a heart attack. Though Karow had a couple suspicions about the death, she still signed the death certificate. However, only forty-one days after his wife died, Coppolino married the wealthy Mary Gibson. This did not make Marjorie Farber happy. Mrs. Farber was known for having an affair with Coppolino. The night the affair blew out, Marjorie found her husband William Farber unconscious in bed. Scared, Marjorie called Coppolino to come over, but since Coppolino was not allowed to practice because of his supposed heart condition, he sent his wife, Carmela. Carmela found William Farber dead in his bedroom. She said he was “blue down one side,” but that there were no signs of distress to the body. But because Coppolino urged her to sign the death certificate, she did, stating “coronary thrombosis” as the reason of death. However, in Dr. Karow’s surgery, Marjorie insisted that everything was a lie. She said that Coppolino gave her a syringe full of some unknown liquid and told her to inject Farber while he was asleep. Though she lost her nerve after a minute injection, she still injected him. The autopsies were carried out by Dr. Milton Helpern. He examined the remains of William Farber and found no sign of heart disease, but there was clear evidence of strangulation. When he examined Carmela, once again he found that her heart was in fine shape. Unfortunately, he could not find the cause of death. After pondering the mystery, he concluded the likeliest agent was an artificial form of curare called succinylcholine chloride. The succinylcholine chloride causes muscle paralysis but does not induce unconsciousness, meaning that Carmela was well aware that her lungs were refusing to function. It was later ruled that Coppolino was not guilty for the death of Farber because both Drs. Joseph Spelman and Richard Ford, said that the evidence of strangulation could have been caused after death, and that Farber’s heart showed clear signs of advanced coronary disease, that was enough evidence to kill him. Though his second trial for the murder of his wife, Marjorie, Helpern and Umberger described their unique experiments that led to the discovery of poison in Carmela’s body. Coppolino was then convicted of second degree murder and would serve twelve years of his life sentence, but he gained parole in 1979.

Mrs. Moss
The week before school starts almost everyone wonders what their teachers will be like in the new year. Will they be a nice, helpful teacher or a strict, uptight one? My junior year I remember having a couple unfamiliar teachers on my schedule. Due to the fact that I did not know if they would be good teachers or not, it made me really nervous to start school. I knew that I would find out sooner or later, but sooner was definitely better.
In the beginning of my junior year, I remember sitting in a room full of people all unfamiliar to me. I remember the feeling of intimidation as I sat there with no one to talk to while everyone else in the room knew at least one person. The small classroom echoed with noise as more people shuffled in. As I sat there waiting for class to start, I remember wondering what the teacher would be like. Trying to find out more about her, I looked around the room and saw numerous posters with cartoons, funny sayings, and animals on them. Before I could continue to inspect the room, the bell rung and everyone rushed to their seats. A couple seconds after the bell rung, a short, African-American woman bustled into the room carrying loads and loads of paper. She quickly set the stacks of paper down onto the front desk, and introduced herself as Mrs. Moss.
The quality I most remember about Mrs. Moss was that she was a bubbly, happy person. She always had the biggest smile on her face and was always laughing. One day she told the class that she was having a bad day; had she not told us I would not have known because she acted no different from every other day. Though she was having a bad day, she still kept her energy up and continued to teach with a big smile on her face. Always being comical and friendly, Mrs. Moss quickly became one of my favorite teachers.
Not only was Mrs. Moss consistently in a good mood, she also made a great teacher and role model. She always thoroughly explained every assignment assigned us, verbally and on paper. By doing so, Mrs. Moss eliminated almost every question that anyone in the class had. And if after the instructions someone still did not understand the assignment, Mrs. Moss would individually help the student that did not understand until the student clearly understood the instructions. Although I have lost points on her papers, I believe that Mrs. Moss was genuinely a fair grader. Besides having only verbal instructions, a rubric was printed and handed individually to each student that states what should go on the paper assigned, and what you could lose points on. To lose any form of points on a paper would be the students’ blunder for not reviewing the rubric before handing in the paper. Truly a great teacher, Mrs. Moss tries her hardest to make sure the student succeeds in her class and for preparing the student for future English classes.
In all my in school, I have never met a teacher that dedicated to helping her students succeed. With Mrs. Moss being such a cheerful person all semester, it definitely made the learning process so much more enjoyable. I truly enjoyed everything about Intermediate Composition because of Mrs. Moss. Not only have I learned more about writing papers and vocabulary, I have also learned that even when you are having a bad day, it is possible to move forward with a smile on your face. I am truly grateful that I got to have Mrs. Moss as a teacher because she taught me so much, and I know that she will continue teaching future classes with the enthusiasm and passion that she taught my class with.

driving in snow and ice

Driving can be dangerous; however, if you follow certain rules, take precautions, and always be careful, you can make something that is dangerous into something that can get you places faster. As every driver knows, the weather can suddenly change with no warning as you are driving, and you have to be aware and ready to take the precautions needed to be safe and to be careful while driving in these weather conditions. Some of these conditions include ice, snow, rain, wind, darkness, fog, etc.
In my opinion, one of the most dangerous weather conditions to drive in is snow because the snow can act as fog as it is falling, and limit the driver’s field of vision. Also, in the wintertime there can be many ice storms as well as snowstorms. This can also make it hard for the driver to concentrate on the road because the driver has to concentrate on the road, but is being distracted by the ice pelting at their windshield. Besides ice, snow can fill the road making it hard for the tires to get any traction. In the winter season, the sun goes down earlier than it does in the summer season, so not only do you have to deal with the snow, you now also have to deal with the darkness. Driving in the snow can make it easy for your car to lose control and to skid. If this happens you have to turn the wheel in the direction you want the front wheels to go. If your rear wheels are skidding left, steer left. Also, when you drive in the snow or while it is snowing, make sure to go slower than the actual speed limit. The speed limit is there to make sure everyone is going at the same speed, but in the snow, going the speed limit can be dangerous due to loose patches of snow that can cause your car to skid.
Another dangerous road condition to is ice. Ice occurs in the wintertime, when the temperature drops drastically. Ice can come from puddles of water that is frozen solid by the temperature, or by snow on the ground that gets compacted together to form a slippery surface. The most dangerous kind of ice is black ice. Black ice is ice frozen without many air bubbles trapped inside, making it almost transparent and invisible. It appears as the color of the material underneath it, making it look like it isn’t there at all. Because black ice can be anywhere, drivers should always drive slowly and carefully in winter conditions and be aware of their surroundings. Also, when you are driving on the highway or expressway, be careful of the bridges. Bridges freeze well before roads and highways do because of the way they are positioned. Bridges are often built high above the rest of traffic, making it easy for the winter wind to hit the bridge above, below, and both sides, which causes the bridge to lose heat rapidly. Also, bridges have no way to trap heat because they are so high up, and will start and continue to lose heat and freeze shortly after the temperatures hit the freezing point.
In conclusion, many different and dangerous road conditions can happen when you are on the road; snow and ice being the most dangerous in most opinions. Just taking a couple extra precautions can prevent many drivers from getting into accidents, whether it is a small or a large accident. Drivers should always be prepared for the worst when they are on the road, therefore they should always be careful and alert no matter the weather conditions.

Fitness Review: Effective Steps to Building Muscle
The article that my fitness review is on is called Effective Steps to Building Muscle. I found it online, on a website that’s just dedicated to fitness and what you can do to achieve it. The article was written by Mandy Gibbons, who is a virtual fitness trainer. She dedicated this article in hopes that people will find it and hopefully it will help them on to a better fitness level.
This article had many different sub categories, but the main thing was how to be fit and how to build muscle and be healthy. Some of the sub categories were Training to Build Muscle, and Eating to Build Muscle, etc. There was also a category that even told you how to make your own fitness muscle building program! Some of their tips for this program were like telling you to always have water while you’re training because it will keep you dehydrated. There was also a part that said to perform a warm up before exercising. And also to cool them down when I’m done. Another piece of advice was to sleep because it will really help your body.
I thought that this article was really blunt, and they really told you what you could do in order to be healthy and build lots of lean muscle. I thought it was also really helpful and I felt that it would let people find out how to build more muscle. I also learned that I don’t have to go to places like the Summit and Lifetime to get fit. I can make my own personal gym at home because the article said that I didn’t need a big gym and little things like dumbbells are okay too!
Some ways that I can use this article to my own advantage would be to try and start my own muscle building program and try to not be so weak. I don’t want to just stop and never work out again after this class, because I feel that I worked really hard these 20 days, and I don’t want my effort to just die. I think I’ll try and keep my strength and effort going, and hopefully be leaner and stronger later on in life.

chang's thing

Alcohol is known as one of the main reason as to why babies are born with mental and physical birth effects in the United States. Wine, beer, or liquor are also included in the category of alcohol. There are many babies in the United States that are born with birth defects each year. One in every 750 babies are born with a pattern of physical, developmental, and functional problems. The main effect of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is that it permanently damages your central nervous system and your brain. Alcohol causes malformed or underdeveloped brain cells and structures. Some signs and symptoms of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome are developmental delay, low birth weight, poor coordination/fine motor skills, lack of imagination or curiosity, learning difficulties, behavioral problems such as hyperactivity, social withdrawal, stubbornness, and impulsiveness. Usually any problems that have anything to do with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome grow stronger as the child grows up and moves into adulthood. They can include mental heath problems to trouble with the law. Some physical characteristics that Fetal Alcohol Syndrome can include are a smooth philtrum (the small grove or indent about the upper lip and below the nose), low nasal bridge, short nose, small head circumference, small midface, and thin upper lip. A child or infant is diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome when there is a history of alcohol exposure before the baby’s birth, the person has some signs of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, and if the person does not meet all the necessary criteria for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. There is no cure for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome but there are treatments for it. Medications can be used to temporarily treat this syndrome. The only prevention of this syndrome are to not drink while pregnant. Although it is found that little drinking while pregnant will not do any harm to the fetus or baby. Only excessive and overdrinking will start causing problems in the baby when it is born. Children born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome has an impact on all the people they come into contact to; not only their parents. Not only does the individual have to face a lifetime of pain, frustration, and disappointment, the impact on all the people around them will also be bad.

personal narrative

Have you ever been reckless on the roads and it got you into an accident? Well that was what happened to me at the beginning of this year. On the night of January 6, 2009, my sister, Amy, my boyfriend, Alan, his two brothers Justin and Andy, and I left Alan’s house around 9:00 p.m. to go to my house. I remember when we walked out onto the porch, the ground was already very slippery. As we walked down the driveway, I saw my sister sliding down the driveway and saying, “Whoa! It’s so slippery!” I then noticed it had been freezing raining pretty hard, and the ground was mostly ice. We all ran into Alan’s 4x4, and he started driving. I have a bad habit of not putting on my seatbelt when I am in a car with my friends, so this time I did not think anything about not buckling up. As we were driving, the freezing rain pelted the car and made small clicking noises as it made contact. The music was turned up fairly loud, and we were all singing along to it. We slid a couple times on the road on the way home and Alan had a hard time braking because of the icy ground, but we did not think it was that big of a deal. It took at least fifteen minutes to get to Cherry Hill, which is the main road my house is by, and I remember how hard it was to stop at the red light.

As we turned onto Lotz at the red light, I turned around to talk to Justin and Andy, who were also in the backseat with me. Alan and Amy were in the front seats, and they were both still singing along to the music. None of us were paying attention to how fast we were going until I looked up and saw the street sign we were supposed to turn at. By then I realized that we were going too fast to be able to slow down and turn in time. As Alan pressed the brakes down to turn, the car slid and the brakes did not work due to the ice on the ground and because of how fast we were going. The car made only half the turn before smashing into a telephone pole. A split second before we crashed, I remembered I did not have my seatbelt on, and my first response was to grab onto the seat in front of me. The sound of the car smashing into the telephone pole was the loudest sound of metal crunching I have ever heard in my life. It was almost as if someone had taken a giant hammer and had smashed the front of the car with it.

As everything calmed down, everyone started talking and asking if everyone was okay. There were no major injuries but there were minor ones. Alan had hit his head on the steering wheel, Justin got a small cut from the seatbelt, Andy got elbowed in the eye by me, Amy was fine, and I hit my head on the ceiling and then on the window. I remember the metallic taste of fear in my mouth as I realized what had just happened. My heart was racing fast, and I was gripping the seat in front of me so tightly, it hurt. We all sat in the car, shocked at what just happened before we noticed that was a car parked to the right of us. Amy rolled down the window, and we heard the lady in the other car ask if we were all right. We answered with a “yes,” and she made sure a couple more times be fore slowly driving away. As soon as she drove away, we all slowly got out of the car to check the damage.

We al got in front of the car and stared in shock. The entire front bumper had fallen off onto the ground and into the snow, and both the headlights were smashed in. The sudden realization that there was a possibility that someone called the police, we all quickly got back into Alan’s car, and Alan pulled away from the telephone pole and started driving to my house, this time, very slowly and on 4-wheel drive.

This experience was quite an eye opener and was very important to me. I chose to write about this because I think almost everyone can relate to being reckless on the roads or just being less careful when they are with their friends in the car because they can be distracted. I think that even if you are with your friends and having fun, safety still comes first, especially in a moving vehicle, and even more if it is the winter season, where it can be icy and hard to drive. In my case, we were lucky that nobody got seriously hurt, but for others who are put in the same situation that we were in might not be so lucky. Having fun with your friends is not wrong, but you should always put safety first when you are with your friends.

To Take A Life

How would you feel if you did not have a choice whether to live or die? That’s what all babies victim to abortion have to face. They have no say in the situation because they have not yet been born, so therefore they are killed. A couple years ago, my friend’s mother got pregnant. She decided that she did not want another child at the time, and had an abortion a couple weeks later. However, less than a year later, my friend’s mother got pregnant again, though this time she did not have an abortion. What was the difference between these two babies? Why was one allowed to live and the other not? Abortion is wrong no matter what the reason. Everyone has a right to live, and if a woman is getting an abortion, because she got pregnant on accident, then she should have to bare the consequences.

Some people believe that abortion should be legal. They believe that abortion can fix a woman’s mistakes with getting pregnant or the woman could just not want a child. Also, they believe that abortion is not murder because it is only a fetus, not yet a fully developed baby. Supporters believe that having a child is their own decision, and if they do not want the baby at the time, they should be able to just abort it. Another reason why there are people who believe abortion is okay is if the mother’s life is in danger or she is going to die if she gives birth to the child. However, these supporters probably do not think about adoption. The woman should give birth to the baby because she got pregnant in the first place, then give it up for adoption if she really does not want the baby. Therefore, the baby would get a chance to live. Though these are good reasons as to why some believe abortion should stay legal, there are also reasons why abortion should be illegal.

There are many reasons why abortion is wrong and misleading. To think an abortion is okay just because the fetus is not a fully developed baby is absolutely wrong on a woman’s part. Abortion is the murder of unborn babies, and although there are people who believe it is not murder because a fetus is just the starting stages of a baby, there are facts to prove some women get abortions later on in the pregnancy when the fetus is already a baby. According to http://www.abortionno.org/Resources/fastfacts.html, 25% of abortions happen between the ninth and tenth week of a woman’s pregnancy. During the ninth week, the embryo has developed into a fetus, has lost its embryonic tail, and is starting to develop its genitals. By this stage, the fetus is now an unborn baby. Also, 1% of abortion happen after the 20th week of pregnancy. After the 20th week, the fetus has already fully developed his ears and can hear. All organs and structures of the fetus has developed too, and now the fetus is just entering a stage of basic growth. If the fetus has the characteristics and features of a living, breathing baby, why is it considered okay to kill it as long as it has not been unborn while killing a baby after it has been born is considered murder and wrong?
Abortion is wrong, just like the killing of a baby is wrong. No one wants to be killed, but at least he/she can try to defend themselves. However, when a child is still in his/her mother’s womb, he/she have no choice in whether he/she get to live or not, and cannot even try to defend themselves. If a female is fooling around and ends up getting pregnant, abortion is the number one solution teens think of. However, they do not consider the living baby inside of them and how the baby will die because of their foolish mistakes. People need to be more careful when they think they are only having fun, because one mistake could lead to a pregnancy, and that pregnancy could lead to an abortion. No matter how anyone looks at the situation, it is still considered murder. There are about 42 million abortions per year, and 115, 000 a day. These are about how many babies that are killed and not given a chance to live. Therefore, before you do something, think about the consequences. They might just change your life.

psych project

Introduction

1) Forensic Psychology includes both psychology and the criminal justice system. Forensic psychology involves applying psychology to the field of criminal investigation and the law.
You need to understand criminal law enough in order to be able to interact with judges, attorneys, and other legal professionals. You also have to be able to testify in court, be able to tell the court what psychological findings you found, and provide information to legal personnel in ways that can be understood.

2) This topic relates to Psychology because when a psychologist treats an individual who has been emotionally traumatized by an accident, the treatment is designed to help the person recover from the trauma. However, when the psychologist is asked to report what happened for the court, regarding the extent of the trauma and how much psychological damage was done, then the psychologist is providing forensic services.

-Forensic psychologists are usually seen as criminal profilers that are almost psychically able to deduce a killer's next move. But in real life, the forensic psychologists practice psychology as a science within the criminal justice system and civil courts.

-The word "forensic" comes from the Latin word "forensis," meaning "of the forum," where the law courts of ancient Rome were held.

-Becoming a forensic psychologist will first require you to get a doctorate in psychology, often (but not necessarily) in clinical or counseling psychology. Usually takes 5 to 7 years of graduate study to complete.

A Beautiful Mind

1) The psychological disorder that John Nash had was schizophrenia. This illness was diagnosed because John was imagining and talking to people that were not really there, for example, his roommate and his niece, and Parcher, the man that is making John think he is working for the government. John collects all these newspaper clippings together, and pins them all up, trying to devise a way to figure out where the Russians will attack next.

2) The symptoms that John Nash revealed during the film was that

3) John Nash managed to have a successful career because he was taking medication at first. Later, he realized that he did not want to take medication because it made him not able to do his work or handle the baby. Though he still saw hallucinations of the three people, John said goodbye to them, knowing they were only in his mind, and ignored them for the rest of his life even when he saw them or when they talked to him.

4) John Nash coped with his illness by first taking medication. He then realized he did not need the medication, and realized that his hallucinations were what they were. And soon learned how to cope with the hallucinations by just ignoring them and everything they have to say or do.

5) The types of treatment that John Nash received to help him with his illness is drug therapy, and shock therapy. The drug medication slowed John down. Making him not able to do things with his child or do his work, and that is why John decided that not taking his medication is the better thing to do even though he would still see the hallucinations without his medicine. Another treatment John received was electric shock therapy. John had to receive this every five days for ten weeks, and this rewired his brain into trying to not see the hallucinations. This treatment helped John.

6) The character I chose to discuss was his wife, Alicia. Throughout John’s disorder, I would say that Alicia was very strong. There were times where she felt that she could not be able to live with someone who imagined people and became violent because of it, but she worked through it with John, and now they are still happily married. She helped John cope with his psychological disorder by working with him through it, and being with him the entire way. She supported him and accepted that John did not want to receive drug therapy.

7) a) Yes, the movie did provide me with a better understanding of physiological disorders because one minute your life could be normal, and the next it can change to having a physiological disorder without warning. You don’t know whether you are going to get it or not.
b) Yes, I was surprised that even though John confronted the hallucinations and told them he knew that they were fake, they kept coming back to him. I would have thought that once John realized they were fake, the hallucinations would then leave him along. However, the hallucinations kept coming back and more persistent then ever.

Sybil

1) An identity disorder is when a person shows multiple identities or personalities, each having their own ways of interacting and dealing with things. Sybil’s personality disorder was caused by her mother’s abuse to her when she was a kid. Her mother physically and sexually abused Sybil, and to deal with the pain and fear of dealing with everything in life now, she developed multiple personalities to escape from the pain.

2) Some of the symptoms that led to the diagnosis of an identity disorder were that she was having black outs all the time. She would be in one place and suddenly “wake up” in another place not remembering how she got there and how long it has been. Another symptom that led to the diagnosis of an identity disorder was that she was doing tasks that she normally does not know how to do. For example, Vicky speaks French and Sybil normally does not know how to, and Vanessa plays the piano, while Sybil knows nothing of playing the piano.

3) Some of Sybil’s defense mechanisms were that she denied her multiple personalities. She said that it was all just a charade, but it was just a way to stop getting close to Doctor Wilbur. Another defense mechanism is repression. In order to forget all the horrible things her mother did to her when she was a kid, she unconsciously pushed them into her unconscious mind. The last defense mechanism Sybil used was regression. One of the personalities she has is Peggy, which is a child, and Ruthie, the baby. She goes back in time, and thinks she is a child and baby.

4) The psychoanalysis technique that are used to treat Sybil are hypnosis. This technique is useful because Doctor Wilbur makes her relive all the events while she is beside her telling her that none of it is real, and that her mother cannot do anything to hurt her anymore. Reliving her most painful moments would make her move beyond it, so she does not have to repress them any longer.

5) Repression has to do with Sybil’s psychological disorder because her mother abused her so badly, both physically and sexually, that any memory of any of her childhood memories would make her switch into another personality because it was too much for her to handle herself. Sybil was very afraid of many things that seemed normal to a regular person because of the relationship between the things and the abuse her mother gave her.

6) The significance of Sybil’s dreams are reflections of her real waking life. All the little things that are in her dreams are symbols of her real life.
a) Kittens in the basket: This represents all of Sybil’s personalities. Sybil is trying to save all her personalities by putting them all into a ‘box’.
b) The Box: This represents Sybil’s body. The box is holding all the little kittens that Sybil finds, and Sybil’s body holds all of her many different personalities.
c) Headless cat: This represents her mother. No matter how much or far she ran, she still could not seem to escape the headless cat. This is the way she feels about her mother. It seems like she will never be able to escape the torture her mother gave her.
d) People waving in the background as she is running in the field: This represents the people in her life that were important to her. Though she wanted to stop and play with them, she could not because the headless cat / her mother was always after her.

7) a) Reference to the “hands” and being afraid of the hands: Sybil is afraid of the “hands” because of when she was getting her tonsils removed, all these hands from the doctors were trying to hold her down, and keep her still so they could remove her tonsils. All she saw were hands coming at her and holding her down, so now when she sees hands, they remind her of the doctors trying to hold her down.
b) Color purple: When Sybil was locked in the box in the warehouse, she had held onto a purple crayon from her room. After she was left alone, she started drawing on the side of the box, as a cry of help, and also to let people know that she was there.
c) Her kittens bothering her: Sybil’s kittens bother her because they remind her of the dream that she was having about the kittens in the box and the headless cat chasing her everywhere she went.
d) Tears: Sybil said that she has not cried a human tear since her grandmother died. This was because her mother always told her not to cry when she was abused or anything else she did to Sybil. In the end when Doctor Wilbur told Sybil that she loved her, Sybil finally broke down and cried her first real tears since the death of her grandmother.
e) The story of the ants: When Doctor Wilbur told Sybil of the story of the ants, Sybil was touched by the story be cause even though ants are so small, they still help each other out when they need it, and they still love each other.
f) Marsha’s suicide attempt: Marsha felt like everything else was not worth it anymore, and she felt that if she killed ‘herself’ and Sybil, then she would put Sybil out of the misery and suffering that she is going through. Marsha thought that death itself was better than the way Sybil was living her life; consumed in fear.
g) Cane shapes/ sharp objects: Sybil has a big fear of cane shapes or sharp objects because of the sexual abuse she experienced from her mother. Her mother kept a tool roll In the kitchen, and it contained many small knives and a button hooker. Because Sybil saw the tools before she was abused, she became afraid of them, thinking they would once again hurt her.
h) It hurts to be touched: Sybil did not receive any love from her mother, and since her father was always out or working, all she experienced touch-wise was abuse. Therefore, when she grew up and whenever she got touched, she felt like she was going to get abused or hit.

8) It was important for Sybil to meet her other personalities because when she met them, she finally accepted herself. She accepted the fact that she had multiple personalities because her mother abused her so much that she could not face the pain herself. When she met them, she became one with them.

9) The importance of Sybil confronting her mother was to finally remember everything her mother did to her. Because she remembered, she could finally let herself release all the anger and hatred towards her mother that she had locked up inside her. It was unhealthy for Sybil to hold that much anger in her, and that was the reason why she developed the multiple personalities. It finally allowed her to move on with her life after confronting her mother.

10) Sybil denied the existence of multiple personalities and tells Doctor Wilbur that it was all a hoax because she was afraid of getting well. She thought that Doctor Wilbur was her only way of getting better, and if something happened to the doctor then she would have no way of getting better. By denying her multiple personalities, she could start slowly pulling away from Doctor Wilbur in case something happened to her, and Sybil would have no way to get better.

11) The kinds of issues/problems I think Sybil faced after her recovery is she still might be afraid of a couple things that she has been afraid of all her life. It could take a couple more sessions with Doctor Wilbur to realize that the objects and colors cannot really hurt her, and that it is only her imagination. Another issue that I think Sybil will face is that she will have a hard time getting close to people and being touched. Although she confronted her mother, I think that she cannot just get over it that quickly. It will be a while before Sybil realizes that being touched is a good thing, and that it will not hurt her anymore.

12) My overall reaction to the movie was that I could not believe that a grown woman could do such horrible things to a child. I thought it was a really good movie overall. I think psychoanalysis is that most appropriate way to treat someone because if you can change the way their mind works or thinks about something, then you can easily get to what you are trying to accomplish in the person. I do think that identity disorders exist because there are just some things in the world that are too overwhelming for one person alone to handle, and by developing multiple personalities, this takes some of the stress off the main person because the stress is split between the other personalities. The main person can switch in and out when something is hurting them or making them uncomfortable.

Cooks

It’s Not As Easy As It Looks

Have you ever been to a restaurant and actually thought about how much work it took the cook to prepare what you are eating at the moment? Probably not, as most people do not think about how their food was prepared before they eat it. In fact, it actually takes the cook a lot of work to make a meal. They have to gather the right ingredients, prepare the cooking utensils, and actually cook the food. Usually when we eat a well cooked meal, we do not think about how long it took to prepare. A meal could be eaten in ten minutes, when it took the cook an hour to make. In reality, a cook’s job is one of the hardest jobs to master because they have to know exactly how much ingredients to put into the food for it to taste and look good. A cook’s job is actually harder than it looks.

There are many different types of cooks. One type of cook is called a Prep Cook. A Prep Cook is a cook that is training to become a cook in a professional kitchen. To train to be a professional cook, the prep cook could peel potatoes, chop fresh herbs, mince pounds and pounds of garlic, and dice onions. Another type of cook is the Short Order Cook. A Short Order Cook is a cook that makes simple, fast-cooking meals and snacks. They can also be called grill cooks, fry cooks, broiler cooks, or breakfast cooks. Usually Short Order Cooks work in coffee shops, family restaurants and steak houses. An important skill this kind of cook needs is to know the right way to place food on the serving plate. The last type of cook is called a Fast Food Cook. Fast Food Cooks work in restaurants with a one-item menu. The food is all ready-to-cook and can be made in fewer than 20 minutes. They usually work with grills or deep-fry fryers for fast cooking. Though there are many different types of cooks, they all still have to know how to put different ingredients together to make a meal.

A typical day for a cook usually consists of a whole day of work, usually from ten in the morning to ten at night. Usually it covers breakfast, lunch and dinner. Therefore, the ability of the cook is to also know how to cook the proper dishes for each meal. The job of the cook is to perfectly combine the ingredients and make an actual dish out of them that satisfy the taste of the customer. In fact, when people cook something at home they do not have to make sure that the ingredients are perfect and fit together, while the cook’s job is to check in detail every single food’s features. Being a cook is not a joke, as most people believe, but it has its challenges and hardships.

Overall, a cook’s job is not as easy as it looks. The cook has to know many skills that could take many years of training and practice to learn and master. No matter what kind of cook someone is, the knowledge behind making food is harder to learn than people may think. Also, a cook’s work hours are usually longer than an average working adults and can consist of ten or more hours. In addition, people not only do not realize how hard it is to actually be a cook, but also know how hard the training was to become one. Thus, before people start judging how easy a cook’s job is, they should learn more about the background of the cook, how they got started, and how hard the job really is.

tobacco

Tobacco Products: Your fault or Theirs?
What would you do if you were blamed for something you did not do? This is what many tobacco selling companies face a year. Each year, many tobacco companies are sued by tobacco users who have illnesses due to smoking and tobacco, and by people who has had family members die from the effects and complications. This topic is important because there are two sides to this argument. Some believe tobacco companies should be responsible for selling tobacco products even though they know it is bad for people, and other believe that it should be the tobacco user’s own fault. Therefore, tobacco companies should not be held responsible for smoking related illnesses and deaths.
There are many reasons why tobacco companies should not be held responsible for smoking related illnesses and deaths. For example, there are kids that start smoking at a very young age. According to http://www.coursework.info/AS_and_A_Level/Healthcare/Smoking_Amongst_Young_People___Why_does_L35173.html, young teens and children start smoking at young ages because smoking gives them something to do with their hands, and it makes them feel less awkward. Also, smoking can make the child or teen feel more grown up since they are practicing adult behavior. They were not pressured into smoking or using tobacco products. This shows that smoking is a choice. The tobacco companies are not making people smoke or use their tobacco products; they are just producing the products. It is a person’s own choice to smoke or not smoke.
In addition, tobacco companies print warning labels onto the cigarette

packets to warn the user of the effects of tobacco. According to http://sonomacigarettes.com/, the Federal Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act of 1965, it required that the warning “Caution: Cigarette Smoking May Be Hazardous to Your Heath” be printed on one of the side panels on every cigarette package. Also, there is a warning on the cigarette packages that state “ SURGEON GENERAL’S WARNING: Smoking Causes Lung Cancer, Heart Disease, Emphysema, and May Complicate Pregnancy.” This shows that the tobacco companies do tell the tobacco user what the user is doing to their body and what could happen if they use the tobacco products.
Furthermore, according to http://smoking.ygoy.com/parental-smoking-influences-children-to-take-up-smoking/, parents who smoke in front of their children give them psychological encouragement and inclination to start smoking at a young age. This shows that children who start smoking at a young age could have picked up this nasty habit by watching their parents smoke. This also shows that the tobacco companies are not forcing young children to smoke; it is actually the children watching their parents smoke that make them think smoking is okay.
These three facts prove why tobacco companies should not be held responsible for smoking related illnesses and deaths.

sentence completion

1) The most difficult questions to answer were the ones about my future. I think they were hard for me to answer because I do not like thinking about the future, I just like to live in the moment and when the future comes, then it comes. I hardly think about the future.

2) Yes, my score corresponds to my own assessment of my level of adjustment because I do tend to have a negative outlook on life, and I view life pessimistically. Although I do have a positive outlook on life, I tend to have more of a pessimistic and negative outlook.

3) Some cautions that should be considered when interpreting the results are that that this test is not a standardized test that has been evaluated by a trained professional. It is only designed to help students understand projective assessment techniques. Also, when you are deciding whether your answer is P, C, or N, you could decide on the wrong letter, and then your score ends up different than it should be.

4) The value this type of test provides for therapists is that it allows the therapist to see if the answers are mostly negative and pessimistic, or more positive and optimistic, and they can tell if the person is generally a happy person, or more of an unhappy person.

5) This type of test might help an individual because they could see how they answer questions, and see if they are more optimistic or more pessimistic, just like it would help the therapist. It could help the individual understand themselves better and maybe help them think about why they are answering the questions the way they are.

personality

Personality Test #1 - The Color Quiz
-The main purpose of this test is to see which color appeals to me best. The test gives you eight different squares of color, and you are supposed to click on the colors that appeal to you most to least. The test says that my personality “Is strong willed and unwilling to take advice from others; however, finds herself currently in a dangerous situation which finding a solution should be top priority.” I do not really find this personality test to be credible because it is not asking you any questions, it is just having you pick colors. Even though colors have their meanings, I do not think it is very accurate. I would think the more accurate personality tests would have questions in them, to find out more about you instead of asking you just for a color that appeals to you most. The information I gathered might be beneficial to me and the field of psychology is that each color has a meaning, and if I picked a bright and cheerful color first, it could mean that I am a very happy person, and if I picked a darker color, I could be not as happy.

Personality Test #2 - Are you practicing good cell phone etiquette?
-The main purpose of this test is to see if I am practicing good cell phone etiquette. This test gives you six questions about your cell phone, and when you would and would not answer it. The test says that I should return my cell phone because I do not answer it enough, or I blow off calls when I am out with my friends or family. I also do not think this test is credible because it only asks you six questions, and I do not think six questions can determine your personality. I also disagree with the test answers because although I do not call or answer my calls often, I am always texting and this test bases whether I should keep my phone or not off of calls only, not texting too. The information I gathered might be beneficial to me and the field of psychology and personality testing because it could tell them how I act out in public and with my friends.

Personality Test #3
-The main purpose of this test is to determine my personality. This test gives you 33 questions, and you have to answer if the question is accurate or inaccurate for you. This test says that I am introverted, irritable, feels invisible, observer, depressed, does not enjoy leadership, reveals little about self, etc. I think this test is credible because it asks you questions in many different categories. It does not just ask you a lot of questions in the same category. I also think this test is credible because I think the way they described me is almost 100% correct, and also I had a friend take this quiz too, and he also said the test described him very well. The information I gathered could be beneficial to me and the field of psychology and personality testing because it could tell the psychologist how I am as a person, and how I would act in scenarios.

2) Extroversion: He believes I prefer social settings.
3) Openness: He believes I keep my feelings to myself.
4) Agreeableness: He believes I get along with people.
5) Conscientiousness: He believes I am reliable.

-The ratings that my boyfriend and I made about me are almost exactly the same. However, for the conscientious trait, it was a little bit different. My boyfriend believes that I am reliable because I usually get things done when asked, but he did not say anything about my procrastination when asked.

-These results relate to research on personality traits because it shows that people can have a lot of the same traits.

-Therapists and counselors may imply that although we have some different or same personality traits, what really decides for us is our experiences, surroundings, influences, etc. we grew up around.

- What I learned out of this survey of my boyfriend and me, is that we are very close in personality traits. When I asked him more about this, what surprised me is that our parents had a lot of the same rules while we were growing up. Therefore, that could have contributed to our personality traits being similar.

To Take A Life

Have you ever thought about how it would feel if you had no choice to live or die? That’s what all babies victim to abortion have to face. They are still unborn; therefore, they have no choice or decision over it, but they are still killed. A couple years ago, one of my friend’s mother got pregnant.
They believe that abortion can fix a woman’s mistakes with getting pregnant, or the woman could just not want a child. Also, they believe that abortion is not murder because it is only a fetus, not yet a fully developed baby. Supporters think that having a baby is their choice, and they should be able to choose whether they want it or not. Another reason why there are people who believe abortion is okay is if the mother’s life is in danger or she is going to die if she gives birth to the child. However, these supporters probably do not think about adoption. If the woman does not want a baby at the time, the woman could still give birth to the baby, and give it up for adoption. Therefore, the baby would get to live. Though these are good reasons as to why some believe abortion should stay legal, there are also reasons why abortion should be illegal.
There are many reasons why abortion is wrong and misleading. To say an abortion is okay and to have it legalized, is wrong. By then, the fetus should be labeled as an unborn baby. Also, 1% of abortion happen after the 20th week of pregnancy. After the 20th week, the fetus has already fully developed his ears and can hear. All organs and structures of the fetus has developed too, and now the fetus is just entering a stage of basic growth. If the fetus has the characteristics of a living, breathing baby, why would it not be considered murder if it is killed while still in the womb?
Abortion is wrong, just like the killing of a baby is wrong. No one wants to be killed, but he/she can try to defend themselves. However, when a child is still in his/her mother’s womb, he/she have no choice in whether he/she get to live or not. If a woman is fooling around and end up getting pregnant, abortion is usually what young teens think of first. However, they don’t consider the living baby inside of them and how the baby will die because of their foolish mistakes. People need to be more careful when they think they are only having fun, because one mistake could lead to a pregnancy, and that pregnancy could lead to an abortion. There are about 42 million abortions per year, and 115, 000 a day. These are about how many babies that are killed and not given a chance to live. Therefore, before you do something, think about the consequences. They might just change your life.

Michael Borovikov
Anne Tam

Birth Order Project
Note: Both group members are first children.
Michael Borovikov has a 3-year-old half brother and a 7-year-old half sister.
Anne Tam has a little sister that is 14 years old.

3.
a. Both group members agree that first children:
Commonly strive to help other people
Believe they should gain and hold superiority over other children
Like being right.
Keep parents and others attention by conforming.
Are usually competent and responsible.
Strive to please others.
Both group members agree that the youngest child:
Behaves like an only child: is pampered and spoiled, is the center of attention, often refuses to cooperate, relies on help from other people rather than their own efforts.
Becomes the boss of the family by getting their own way.
Thinks they are inferior, and try to compete and overtake other siblings.
May not be taken seriously.
Feels smallest and weakest.
b. Both group members believe that first children:
Do not misbehave when they do not have their parent’s attention.
Do not become discouraged if they do not have competent or responsible behavior.
c. Anne and Michael believe that the first child is the “good guy” in the family, and likes helping people out as well as being responsible and pleasing others. The first child remains the nicest because they believe it is the best way to keep parents and family members attention. The Youngest child feels that the oldest child and the parents have more superiority and are supposed to make decisions and do things for them.
The oldest child normally does not misbehave to get attention unless they are an only child. If the oldest child does not have an experienced or responsible personality, they do not normally become discouraged; instead, they misbehave.

5. Michael Borovikov’s birth order characteristics may have been altered by the birth of a half sister and half brother when he was 10 and 14 years old. The birth of siblings late in someone’s life is known to reset the facts about the birth order since there is a large age difference between the first and second child (ten years). Anne Tam’s sister is only 2-3 years younger than Anne, and, therefore, could have a different relationship with Anne than Michael would have with his siblings.

2.
A. The only child is spoiled early on, and gets used to having everything they want. This child learns to control their parents since they are the only child that the parents care about at the time.
B. The first child is pampered and becomes used to being the center of attention, until they experience dethronement of this attention when the second child is born. The first child is then obliged to maintain superiority over the next children and help their parents to keep as much attention from them as possible.
C. The second child gets divided attention from their parents because the first child keeps some of it. The second child may misbehave or rebel to bring attention to themselves. They are in constant competition with the first child, often exhibiting opposite traits to overtake the first child.
D. The middle child is lonely because they feel left out, having no rights or privileges that the first child and not as much attention as last child has. Parents naturally focus their attention on the first child’s issues, such as college, and the youngest child’s development to pay enough attention to the middle child.
E. The youngest child is the least capable, therefore relies on everyone else to do things for them, since all the older siblings are more intelligent. The youngest child may not be taken seriously, because the older children’s problems are bigger and more important.

4) No, my group member does not share any common family experiences or issues that may or may not have impacted our birth order characteristics. However, we still share many characteristics of being a first child, and opinions about our younger sibling(s).

6) We feel the advantages of knowing about birth order and the impact on an individual’s personality are we know how to treat young children depending on their birth order position. We would also know why children behave the way they do and how we could correct it or guide their behavior.

7) We feel the disadvantages of knowing about birth order and the impact on family dynamics are that we might over think what we know, and we might treat children differently because of their birth order. I think it is good to know how to treat children according to their birth order so they do not feel left out or neglected, but if we treat them solely on what we know about their birth order, it might not be very good.

8)The legitimate criticisms of determining personality according to one’s birth order are that they aren’t always accurate. Everyone has their own personality, and even though they follow some of the birth order characteristics, they probably don’t follow all of them. External factors can also have an effect on a child’s personality depending on the type of parents they have or the conditions that they live in, etc.

9) Overall, we agree with the theories related to birth order for us and our family members because we fit many of the birth order characteristics, and we also agree that our siblings fit many of the characteristics for their birth order.

The Masks We Wear

1) The masks I wear are the mask of happiness, and calmness. Other then when I am at home, I am always “wearing” the mask of happiness. I do this because I do not want others to know if I am upset because then they will feel bad, and I dislike it when people feel bad for me. I also “wear” the mask of calmness because I do not like showing any emotion besides happiness outside of my house.

2) What contributes to me wearing different “masks” is my relationship with the person. For example, my parents, I do not really have to wear a mask. I show my true self to them, no matter how mean or hostile I am because I do not care what they think of me, but with my friends, I usually wear a happiness mask. It also depends on how close I am with the person. I tend to show more of my true self, however not completely, if I am closer to the person.

3) Yes, there are differences between the way I want to be seen by my parents and by my friends. It is this way because I am not really that close with my parents, and that makes me not care how they see me. I feel like I don’t have to try to be nice, or make them like me, so I don’t really wear a mask around my parents, I can just be myself. Around my friends however, I feel like I have to be nicer and happier just because I feel like they won’t like me as much if I acted the way I did around my parents around them.

4) Yes, I wear a certain mask at school, and in the classroom, but they do not change from activity to activity, or class to class. I keep a happy and calm mask on whenever I am in school. To me, I feel like school life and home life are two different things. All the emotions I feel at home, no matter how sad or mad I am, when I come to school, I am happy. I think it is because I do not want people to know I am upset, so when I am at school, I am happy and if something is wrong, I pretend that everything is perfect.

5) Yes, I reveal different masks to different friends. I feel like the friends closer to me know the real me, and I “wear” less masks around them because they have known me for so long, and I feel like even if I am not happy 24/7, they will still like me. The friends that I am not so close with, or am just acquaintances with, I “wear” the most masks around them, mostly the happy mask. I am afraid that if I show my real self, then they will not like me.

6) Yes, my mask changes for members of the opposite sex. I think around males, I am more awkward and giddy. Around females, I am just happy. I think this is because people always want to make the opposite sex like them, even if they have a significant other. I also change my ask for people of different ages because I act more mature and nice when I am around adults and/or people older than I am. However, I do not change my mask for different race, religion, etc.

7) My masks are reshaped from day to day depending on my feelings and emotions. I think that if I am tired or something happened throughout the day, I am less happy towards my not-so-close friends, and more hostile towards my closest friends. The weather also affects my masks. I feel more happy when the weather is dark and gloomy, then when it is sunny and bright.

8) My concept of the “ideal” mask is to be happy all the time when I am with my friends, no matter how close or not close I am to them. I am striving to attain that “persona” because it would make it more fair to all my friends that are closer to me, and so they don’t have to feel my hostility when I am feeling a little upset.
